Black Residue On Granite After Sealing
by Stan

QUESTION:
We have an expensive granite countertop from Brazil (reinforced underneath) - called Carmello. It was sealed before installation. It is dark brown.
Even though we have cleaned with soap and water, the countertop gives off a black residue (on a paper towel or sponge). It appears that the residue is a byproduct of the sealer, which is a german made silcone applied by the installation company. We tried sealing and then wiping the cutout for the sink to replicate our experience with the actual countertop. What is this balck residue? How do we get rid of it?

ANSWER:
Stan, this is a tricky one without seeing it, but I'd agree with you that it probably has something to do with the granite sealer used.
I would strip off the granite sealer using methylene chloride. This is safe for the granite, but will clean off whatever is on the surface.
This won't be a fun project. Need to protect everything a create good air flow/ventilation since MC is a potent solvent.
You'll find detailed instructions on how to strip off a granite sealer in the
