Black marble coffee table has water/wine stains.

by Luna
(Troy, MI USA)

QUESTION:

I have a black marble (with some white striations) topped coffee table and it has wine and water stains as well as a stain from where a silver tray sat on it (apparently wet?). What is the best way to remove the stains?

ANSWER:

There are two types of spots that occur on marble that are commonly confused.

Most people call them both "stains", but only one type is actually a stain.

True stains result from a substance absorbing into the marble causing a dark spot.

So, if the spot(s) are dark, then you need to follow the instructions provided in the Removing Granite & Marble Stains e-book, which covers all types of stains and the various procedures to remove each type.

Cleaning marble stains cannot be done by regular cleaning methods, but they can be easily removed in most cases. The e-book explains it all.

The other spot is called "etching." This is not a stain, but rather physical damage to the marble from contact with acidic foods and drinks (like wine) or from use of harsh cleaners (most of them are).

Etching creates dull and light spots people often call "water stains" or "water spots" or "glass rings".

On polished (shiny) marble use the ETCH REMOVER / Marble polishing paste to restore the color and shine. Works excellent.

Etching on honed marble is a different story since a honed surface is created differently than a polished surface.

You can call in a marble cleaning and maintenance professional or you usually can achieve satisfactory results following the directions in the Removing Etch Marks e-book and doing it yourself.

One more detail to consider is that if the etching is very severe (rough to the touch) then a pro will likely be required for either a polished or honed surface.

Severe etching is rare, but etching restoration and marble repair is a process. When the damage is bad, then more rigorous and skilled treatment is necessary.

Good Luck,
Ryan
