Black Deposits in White Marble Slab

Marble slab
QUESTION:
The white marble slab we received has malachite black spots in one area, which I think spoils the look- it looks like black paint splatters. Can these be polished off, or is this a normal flaw?
ANSWER:
As far as I know malachite is green, so probably not that, but something is there and it really doesn't matter what. It is stone formed over millions of years... could be many things.
If they are right on the surface, it may be possible to grind down the marble and remove them and then re-polish. But if the deposits run through the whole thickness of the slab, then there's nothing you can do about it.
Do you notice them on the opposite side? If so, then you're stuck. If not then you may just have the opposite side polished.
Good Luck,
Ryan
