Best Sealer For Light Granite

by Howie
(New York)

QUESTION:

I just had Shivakashi granite counter tops installed. What is the best brand of sealer to use?

ANSWER:

As a general rule, light colored granites are more porous and absorbent requiring a thorough and proper sealing.

For the record... Shivakashi is not granite. It's gneiss. This is common. Many stones that are similar but not scientifically or geologically granite are sold as "granite." Just FYI... everyone does it and even true granites can vary from stone to stone.

That's why it's always important to test a sample of the exact slab you are considering prior to installation to see how porous it is and if it will be suitable for the environment (kitchen, bath, etc.).

What's the "best" sealer?

Well, I can highly recommend these for porous stones:

1. StoneTech Bullet Proof
2. MB-4 Impregnating Sealer
3. 511 Porous Plus (Miracle Sealants)

You'll probably want to make two applications and test your granite countertop every year. Of course, when you start noticing water is turns the stone darker... you need to seal it again.

Carefully follow the directions. It's very important to remove any excess sealer before it dries on the surface.

Good Luck,
Ryan

can you add some comments for your benefit

We just had Shivakaski Granite installed in our kitchen. First question: Would Shivakski granite be a normal selection for kitchens? I can say, we too notice water markes right away. I asked the installer if they had sealed the counter top and he indicated they had?? He is coming back to add a second coat to the counter top. When or how do you determine if you sealed the counter top well enough??

===Answer:

By performing the water test for sealing granite countertops.

how do I fix the dark coloration
by: Anonymous

How to I fix the dark discoloration on my light granite. I believe it is from water, it is on the right side of my sink, how can I correct this problem, and restore the light granite color like the rest of my kitchen. thank you

ANSWER: It is not from water. Water does not stain. It is probably oil.

You'll have to make a poultice:

Make a Poultice

1. Buy Acetone and some talc powder. Talc is easy to find, but you may have to hunt a bit for the hydrogen peroxide. The kind at the drug store is too weak. Try a beauty parlor for "hair bleaching" strength or you can order both from our products page.

2. Mix the Acetone and talc into a paste like peanut butter.

3. Apply poultice to the stain about 1/2 thick and 1/2 border.

4. Cover poultice with plastic wrap, seal edges with masking tape and let sit 48 hours.

5. Remove plastic, but don't touch poultice. Let it dry another day until hard.

6. Remove with plastic/wood spatula.

7. Repeat process until stain has been drawn out of the stone.
