Antique Marble Washstand Yellow Stain
by Joan Comeaux
QUESTION:
A yellowish to gold stain on antique marble that probably wasn't sealed. It is not a shiny surface and shouldn't be for that period. It should not look new or shiny as that would diminish the authenticity of the piece as far as age. However removing the large area of stain would enhance the beauty of the washstand. It is white with grey veins. Any answers out there.... Thanks
ANSWER:
True, many older pieces of marble where left honed and never polished... never were shiny.
Cleaning marble is not difficult although traditional cleaning methods (spray something on, wipe off) won't work to remove a marble stain.
The stain could be from a number of things one of which is iron deposits found in most white marble that if exposed to water can rust and leach through to the surface causing yellow, brown or orange stains.
Whatever caused the stain, you'll find the appropriate marble maintenance solution in the
Removing Marble & Granite Stains ebook, which details step-by-step the most effective and inexpensive methods for cleaning marble stains.
